LESSON 4 OF 7 · 6 MINUTES

Make your site readable to AI answers

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can only name you if they can read you. Check what they see.

Ask ChatGPT the question your best customer asked before they found you. Look at who it names. If it is not you, the reason is usually something you can fix.

What AI tools need

  • Your robots.txt lets their crawlers in. Some sites block them without meaning to.
  • Your pages have text in the HTML, not only text that appears after JavaScript runs.
  • Each important page says what it is in its title and description.
  • Pages that answer a question are phrased as that question.

llms.txt

An llms.txt is a short file at the root of your site listing what the site is and which pages matter. It is a proposal, not a standard every tool reads. It costs nothing to add and takes ten minutes.

EASIEST WAY

The free site audit checks what a search engine and an AI answer engine can read on your site, and lists the fixes in order. The llms.txt generator writes the file from the pages you already have.

DO IT YOURSELF

Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for rules naming GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. View the source of your homepage and check your main message is in the HTML. Write a llms.txt by hand: a title, one paragraph, and a list of your main pages with a line each.

Do it now

  1. Ask one AI tool your buyer's question.
  2. Check robots.txt for AI crawler rules.
  3. Check your homepage text is in the page source.
  4. Add an llms.txt.

Quick answers

Will this get me named in AI answers?

It removes the reasons you would not be. Being named still depends on whether other sites talk about you.

Should I block AI crawlers?

That is your call. If you want to be named in AI answers, they need to be able to read you.
